UNICAL FEES HIKE: PRESIDENTIAL AIDE URGE UNICAL VC TO SHUN INCREMENT OF TUITION FEES

-Appeals For Calm, Call for strict adherence to Presidential directive by University Management.

The Senior Special Assistant To President Tinubu on Students Engagement, Hon. Sunday Asefon, has called on the Management of the University of Calabar to rescind it's decision to hike the tuition fees payable by the students but rather engage with student Leaders and relevant Stakeholders to forestall breakdown of law and order in the University.

Hon. Asefon made this call in Abuja while reacting to the news report that Students of the University of Calabar ( UNICAL)  were protesting against the hike of tuition fee by the University Management.

He stated that the increase of tuition fees by the University authority was a contravention of the directive given by  President Tinubu to the management of Tertiary institutions across the country.

Hon. Asefon stated  that President Tinubu had earlier directed the authorities in all Federal Institutions of higher learning to halt arbitrary increase in sundry fees payable and where possible defer further increase so that parents and students don’t face too many difficulties.

He further posited that in demonstration of the commitment of Mr. President to revamp the educational sector, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, while speaking at the 75th Founder’s Day ceremony of the University of Ibadan had cancelled the 40 per cent deduction of the Internally Generated Revenues of federal universities, describing the policy implementation as “ill-timed”.

Hon. Asefon called on the University Management to abide by the directive of Mr. president while negotiations continues.
He further appealed to the students to remain calm and avoid wanton destruction of school properties under the guise of protest.

He assured that He will lead Students Stakeholders and Leaders to meet with the University Management over the hike.

Meanwhile, In the statement by the University’s PRO, Mr Effiong Eyo, the upward review of the tuition fees was taken at an emergency meeting of the University Senate on Friday.
