Group Appeals To Governor Dapo To Support Afon-Zone In Producing Local Government Chairman

The Progressive Patriots group from Afon zone in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State has called for equal representation and opportunities within the local government.

At a press conference held in Abeokuta on Thursday, the group's chairman, Biyi Ogunrinola, appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to support the Afon zone in producing the next local government chairman.

Ogunrinola emphasized that Imeko-Afon Local Government belongs equally to both the Ketu and Isokan divisions, not just the Ketu division. He stressed that it is the right of the Afon zone to produce the local government chairman, stating that the zone would no longer settle for anything less.

"Currently, Imeko Ward and Ketu Division hold multiple key political offices: a member of the Federal House of Representatives, a representative in the Federal Character Commission, the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, a member of the Ogun State College of Science and Technology, a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, a Consultant to the Governor on Media, the Immediate Past Local Government Chairman and Secretary, as well as the Local Government Party Chairman,” he noted.

Ogunrinola called on Governor Abiodun and APC leaders in the state to address the imbalance and ensure that the upcoming local government elections are free, fair, and inclusive, allowing all zones to compete for political offices.

"Since 1997, all elected chairmen have come from Imeko Township and Ketu Division. This is clear political sectionalism, and it is no longer acceptable," he said.

Ogunrinola argued that the Afon zone's demand for representation is fair, noting that the people of Isokan Division would be waiting for a positive response from the state leadership. He further highlighted the pressing issue of marginalization within the Afon Division, commonly referred to as Zone 2, which includes Afon, Owode-Obada, Agboro/Olorunda, and Atapele Wards.

"Despite our significant contributions to the creation of our local government in 1996, we have been systematically excluded from producing the local government chairman. This position has been monopolized by Imeko Township and Ketu Division," he explained.

Ogunrinola likened the situation between Imeko/Ketu and Afon zones to the longstanding refusal of Ogun Central and East Senatorial Districts to support Ogun West in producing the governor of the state. "We are saying enough is enough. This injustice and inequality must end. It is Afon's turn to produce the next chairman of Imeko-Afon Local Government," he concluded.
