Lions Club Roll Out Free Diabetes Awareness, Screening Program for Ota Residents
In a significant effort to promote health and wellness, Lions International, District 404-B4, Region 7 (Ota Axis) held a Diabetes Awareness activity on November 21, 2024, at the Ansarudeen Society Praying Ground in Ota, Ogun State. The event provided free diabetes screening to over 150 people while raising awareness about the prevention and management of the disease.The program began with a sensitization and awareness walk from Ahmadiya Junction, Ojuore, to Iyana Ota Roundabout, where the event was held. Lions and Leos, clad in branded shirts and carrying banners, engaged community members along the route, distributing educational materials and spreading messages about diabetes prevention.The Apex Nurse of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Alhaja Akinremi, served as the guest speaker. She delivered an insightful lecture on diabetes prevention and management. Representing the District Governor, Lion Taiwo Fatoki, Lion Pharm. Debo Afolayan gave a goodwill message, emphasizing the importance of early detection and lifestyle changes in preventing diabetes. He also shared valuable facts about the disease, encouraging attendees to take proactive steps for better health.Past District Governor Waheed Kadiri also delivered a goodwill message, highlighting that diabetes is not a communicable disease. He urged everyone to show compassion and care for individuals living with it.The event was officially opened by Lion Iyabo Aina, the Committee Chairperson for the Ota Axis, who extended her gratitude to the leadership of Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria Ota Branch for providing the venue free of charge. She also commended the Lions and Leos for their selfless service in making the program a success.
The occasion was graced by notable Lion leaders, including Region 7 Chairperson, Lion Tessy Nnadi, the District GMT Coordinator, Lion TAK Oloyede, the District Diabetes Awareness Coordinator Lion Clifford Ihetu, Zone 7B Chairperson Lion Dipo Owolabi, and Chief of Protocol Lion Abayomi Oke-Asiwaju among others.
In his remark, the Chairman of Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria, Ota, Alhaji Yahya Dada, noted that the event served as a platform for education and collaboration, showcasing Lions International’s commitment to community health.
Other beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting the importance of free screenings and awareness campaigns in combating diabetes.
