EFCC Begins Monitoring of Local Government Fund Allocation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has started monitoring the allocation and usage of funds distributed to local governments across Nigeria, according to EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

He revealed this during a courtesy visit by the National Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP), led by Isaac Abrak, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

In response to the NCYP’s calls for greater oversight of local government finances, particularly after the financial autonomy granted to them, Olukoyede assured the group that the EFCC is already on the case. He explained that the EFCC’s Fraud Risk Assessment and Control department is dedicated to monitoring and tracking payments, contracts, and other financial releases to ensure funds are used for their intended purposes.

Olukoyede also emphasized the importance of integrity in leadership, urging NCYP members to promote unity and ethical conduct among Nigerians, regardless of religious background. “Doing the right thing has nothing to do with whether you are a Christian or a Muslim. Let’s continue to operate as people of integrity irrespective of our faith,” he stated.

Isaac Abrak, leader of the NCYP, expressed concern about the slow pace of development at the grassroots level, stressing that local government funds need to be managed efficiently to drive growth, reduce poverty, and improve living standards. He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting local government autonomy but argued that achieving even 40% of the responsibilities of local governments could bring about significant progress.

The youth leader also commended Olukoyede for his leadership and the EFCC’s efforts, particularly their role in securing a victory in the P&ID case in 2023. He praised Olukoyede’s achievements since taking office, acknowledging his professional conduct and dedication to his faith.
