FG to Meet NUT, Principals Over 12-Year Basic Education Proposal
The Federal Government will meet with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS) on Wednesday to discuss the proposed extension of basic education to 12 years. The plan, introduced by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, seeks to integrate junior and senior secondary education into a continuous system. While the proposal has sparked debate among stakeholders, ANCOPPS National President Musa Ibrahim clarified that it remains a suggestion and has not yet been enacted into law. He emphasized the need for thorough discussions before any decision is made.
Similarly, NUT President Audu Amber stressed the importance of analyzing the government's intentions before taking a stance on the matter. Meanwhile, National PTA Chairman Haruna Danjuma expressed support for the initiative, noting that it could reduce dropout rates and enhance skill acquisition by ensuring a seamless transition from junior to senior secondary education.
The proposed structure would also introduce vocational training from primary four, equipping students with practical skills for both higher education and career opportunities.
